Writing Memoir:  A Toe in the Water

“Hope is an embrace of the unknown,” says Rebecca Solnit. And Joan Didion reminds us
we tell ourselves stories in order to live. Maya Angelou is right: “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story” inside us.

Did you survive a catastrophic event or a troubled childhood? Are you currently transitioning and dealing with others’ misconceptions and phobias? Are you celebrating your career climb against all odds? Did you walk the Camino, home-school your child, retreat to the country and build a house on your own? Has your love of gardening or painting shaped who you are today?

But how to begin? This short workshop will offer you first steps to writing the story you want to tell. Lorri will provide examples, practical advice and approaches to writing about your life. A memoir focuses on a thread, a moment, an experience, preoccupation or an ongoing presence in your life. We will discuss how to begin, the building blocks of memoir, the ethics of writing about others, along with forms memoir takes, such as postcard stories, poetry, personal essays and full-length prose.

Lorri will post handouts to read a week before the workshop, along with a suggested list of readings and web resources to keep you motivated.
